7 Ways To Avoid The Winter Funk

The coming of winter is a celebration of color -- first the leaves cycle through brilliant shades of orange and red, and soon the skies change and suddenly every square inch is coated with shimmering snowy white. For many, however, there is one more color synonymous with winter: blue. There isn't a soul out there unfamiliar with the winter funk (unless you live in the tropics). When the mercury falls and sunlight becomes scarce, it's not uncommon to become tired, lethargic, irritable, and depressed. Don’t worry -- this year will be different. With our help, you'll be prepared to fight the funk. Here are 7 ways to avoid the winter funk.
7- Stay hydrated Why? Believe it or not, people are more susceptible to dehydration in cold weather, and even mild dehydration over prolonged periods of time can affect our health. Studies have shown that the human body reacts differently when exposed to cold, decreasing levels of certain fluid-regulating hormones. The result: We simply do not feel as thirsty. How? If you want a way to avoid the winter funk, drink more water! An excellent way to gauge proper water intake is to check the color of your urine. Your urine should be the color of a manila folder or clearer. Drink early. Drink often. And get creative. Adding some lemon to water will improve its flavor and add important vitamins. Lastly, try warming it up in some hot apple cider or decaffeinated tea.
6- Start readingWhy? Because reading is a great way to avoid the winter funk! Reading offers a great escape from reality, letting you take your mind off the cold. How? It's time to read that old classic that has been on your to-do list for decades. Go to your local library or your bookstore, talk to a friend for suggestions or get online and do a little research. Don't just go out and pick any old book blindly. Doing a little background work will keep you reading longer.
5- Find a winter sportWhy? Exercise burns calories and can be a great way to avoid the winter funk. Burning calories will release heat as a by-product, raising your body temperature. Finding a winter sport or group exercise is also a great way to socialize, which should help you conquer the mental pangs of winter-driven depression. How? Most people hunker down over the winter haul, eating more and exercising less, making it all the more important to get up and get active. Get outside. Go for a walk or take up cross country skiing. Get to the gym or take in a group exercise such as spinning or kickboxing. If all else fails, avoid the winter funk by going for a swim followed by a nice hot shower.
4. Change your dietWhy? To boost your metabolism so that you can burn extra calories while avoiding gaining those few extra pounds of winter insulation. How? Let's face it, the majority of people become less active in the winter. When coupled with an intake of fatty foods, the winter recipe is one of weight gain. So, what's a guy to do? The key is in meal moderation -- eat smaller portions more often and always start your day off right with a light breakfast. Use lean meats in your dinner dishes. To regain protein, increase your intake of legumes and nuts. To stay warm, try low sodium broth- or tomato-based soups with lots of vegetables. And for the most part, avoid fatty foods like cream-based soups, creamy pot pies and chili or stews loaded with non-lean ground beef.
3. Get a cool new winter coatWhy? Because your old winter coat is tattered and worn and smells like week-old socks. How? While it's great to keep warm, there's no need to sacrifice style. However, don't think that you need to sacrifice warmth to stay in style. Be sure to check out AM for some great suggestions on fashionable fall and winter coats, or you can always consult our handy Style Bible.
2. Take public transportation or car pool. Why? To protect the environment, to avoid the frustration of winter car care and driving, and to get warm and socializing. How? This one's pretty self-explanatory -- the next time you're scraping the frost from your windshield, just imagine stepping onto a nice warm bus where the driver isn't you. Public transportation can definitely be one of the way to avoid the winter funk.
1. Wake up earlyWhy? Because sunlight is scarce in winter. A lack of sunlight is the primary cause of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can greatly reduce mood and lower your vitamin D to dangerous levels. Lack of vitamin D is a risk factor for osteoporosis and various cancers. Waking up and going to bed early during those gloomy winter months will ensure that you remain in synch with your biological clock, leaving your spirits high and your energy stocks full. Simply put: It's the number one way to avoid the winter funk.

First Date Tips

From LoveToKnow Dating
For many people, first dates are about as much fun as a trip to the dentist's office, but a few simple first date tips can eliminate any unnecessary pain. When done correctly, first dates are a great way to gauge chemistry, compatibility, and communication.

Location, Location, Location
If you are planning the date, you have a huge advantage. The most successful first dates are the ones in which both parties feel completely at ease. Although it is tempting to go all out on the first date, low-key plans are better. If the date goes well, you'll have plenty of time later to wow your partner with your elaborate plans. When thinking about the perfect location for your first date, consider the following first date tips:
The less complicated, the better. Avoid drawn-out, multi-part dates. These leave too much room for unexpected surprises. An evening that flows is much more relaxing.
Pick a nice, simple restaurant. No one wants to be worried about the proper fork to use or how to pronounce restaurant items.
A laid back, fun date will allow both parties to relax. Comedy clubs, sporting events, and concerts are good bets to lighten the mood.
As cheesy as they sound, bowling, miniature golf, go-carts, and video arcades can all be fun, icebreaking dates. Laughing over a crashed go-cart can quickly erase tension and lead to an air of familiarity
Dress to Impress
It goes without saying, but you should definitely be neatly groomed for the first date, a seemingly obvious first date tip. Love may be blind, but first dates are not. Here are some first date tips for your wardrobe:
Dress appropriately for the date. If you are going to a basketball game, jeans would be far better than a formal dress. As much as you'd like to show off your new outfit, you'll only look foolish if you're overdressed.
Do not dress too seductively. Even if you typically dress in a sexy way, tone it down a bit for the first date. Extremely provocative clothing can be distracting. It can also give the impression that you are only looking for a physical encounte
Be Yourself, But Not Too Much
The conversation is probably the most important part of the first date. Through talking to your date, you'll quickly find out if you have anything in common and if you are at all compatible.
While it is important to be yourself, it's more important to be your best self. You are just getting to know each other and certain things are better left unsaid--for now. Some first date tip conversation pointers include:
Avoid potentially polarizing debates. The first date is not the appropriate time to discuss views on the death penalty, abortion, same-sex marriage, or any other hot topics.
Leave the past behind. Resist the urge to entertain your date with stories of your abusive childhood, painful divorce, or complicated relationships. Although these subjects are part of you and may very well need to be discussed, this is not the right time.
Be upbeat. We are naturally more attractive when we are being positive. Now is not the time to launch into a tirade about your rotten luck, terrible year, or awful job. Find something pleasant to discuss.
Many first date tips advise daters to make a list of conversation starters. That's good advice, to a point. If the conversation is flowing, you will probably not need such a list. If, however, there is an awkward lull, turn to your list, but make it as natural as pos
Getting Physical

The big question used to be, "Should I kiss on the first date?" That has evolved into, "Should I have sex on the first date?" While there is no right answer, there is one answer if you are looking for a long-term relationship: Wait. Sex too early in the game can actually be an obstacle on the road to real commitment.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for casual sex, only you know when the time and conditions areAbout that Kiss
As for the kiss, follow your heart--and your hormones. Times have changed in this department, and kissing on the first date no longer has negative connotations. If you enjoyed the date, felt a real spark, and would love to have a second date, go ahead and pucker up.

Most Important First Date Tip
The most important first date tip of all is to be honest. As the night draws to a close, you will have probably made up your mind about the compatibility. While honesty can be awkward at times, it is always better to be upfront about your feelings.
Don't say you'll call if you never intend to.
Avoid saying, "Let's do it again," if you know there will be no second date.
If you did have a great time, say so. Both men and women are often insecure in the dating game, and everyone enjoys knowing where they stand.
In Conclusion
Dating is not nearly as painful as we all make it out to be. Just be honest, be yourself, and have fun, and soon you'll be the one giving out the first date tip

10 tips for a fun — but frugal — Valentine’s Day

Do you have a honey, but not a lot of money? Try these economical ideas
Valentine’s Day sure can be an expensive little holiday. Officials with Huntington Bank in Ohio estimate that many would-be Romeos will spend anywhere from $180 to $420 on this single celebration this year.
But wait: You say you’re still struggling to pay off your credit-card debt from December? Ouch!
Bearing in mind that money worries can be efficient and ruthless relationship killers, perhaps the worst Valentine’s Day gift you could give is anything that leaves you grappling with debt and debt-related stress. That said, you don’t have to appear cheap or forgo fun and romance altogether, either.
These tips can help you dream up an approach to this year’s celebration that is both meaningful and economical.
1. Get creative when it comes to dinner. You really don’t have to spend $85 to $250 on a romantic dinner at a restaurant. Why not have a nice candlelit dinner at home? You could even get all dressed up for it. If you know you’re going to be too tired to cook after work on Valentine’s Day, which falls on a Thursday this year, order a special meal ahead of time and pick it up on your way home.
2. Enjoy a little ambiance. If you both really want to go out on the town together, you could have coffee or a drink and dessert at an expensive café, restaurant or romantic bistro. This is a way to savor the atmosphere — and your date — without emptying your wallet.
3. Play hooky. OK, do NOT follow this tip if your job or your partner’s job is hanging in the balance. But if you’ve racked up some vacation time, or if your employer allows you to take personal days from time to time, why not see if you can take the day off together on Thursday? Depending on where you live, the two of you could stroll through a park, walk on a beach, go snow-shoeing, take a rowboat or paddleboat out on a lake, or catch a matinee movie. You also could drive to a small town near your home or through neighborhoods you’ve never visited before and search for small, out-of-the-way places to eat or find public parks and open spaces for walks. Or, heck — if the two of you can score Thursday and Friday off work that week, you could enjoy a four-day weekend together. You could do this at home, of course, or you could plan a short getaway that isn’t prohibitively expensive. For ideas on how to line up reasonably priced accommodations and find other travel deals, this past “10 Tips” column about saving money on summer travel contains tips that can be helpful at any time of year.
4. See some live music. Check to see whether a university or college in your area is offering any potentially enjoyable concerts on Feb. 14. Performances by the college music department would likely be free or cost a fraction of the price charged by professional orchestras and opera houses.ps that can be helpful at any time of year.
5. Seek out some silence. Here’s a potential date idea if you’ve both been stressed out lately: You could wander through libraries and bookstores with coffee shops that encourage browsing. Rediscover passages you love from your favorite books, and enjoy the quiet. (Cautionary note: Be careful not to go nuts buying $25 paperbacks! That could defeat the whole purpose of this tip!)
6. Have low-cost fun with food on Feb. 14. You can pull out the cookie cutters and make heart-shaped cookies and even cut your lunch sandwiches into hearts. You also can make heart-shaped cupcakes by placing a marble inside each muffin tin on the outside of the paper cupcake cup.
7. Give thoughtful gifts. Most people stick to the same general gift themes on Valentine’s Day: flowers, chocolates, cards, maybe a piece of jewelry. Can you think of something different that might mean a whole lot more — and maybe even cost a whole lot less? This past "10 Tips" column about how to avoid overspending during the holiday season includes a tip about making your own gifts. Such gifts could include cakes, cookies or gift certificates for your services. The gift certificate idea might be just the ticket for you if you’re short on cash but high on love this Valentine’s Day. You could offer to run errands for your loved one, make a nice dinner, clean the house, repair the car or give a massage.

8. Reflect on that flower purchase. If you’re sure your special someone will be devastated without the gift of flowers, then you probably should get some. But once again, you don’t have to follow the herd. Everyone opts for roses at this time of year, but there are plenty of other gorgeous and neglected (i.e., less expensive) flower varieties to choose from. And red isn’t your only option, either. You also could choose peach, pink or yellow. What’s more, if you place your flower order early, you stand to save as much as 15 percent on your purchase. And here’s another detail to consider: Does your partner love to garden and work in the yard? If so, a beautiful outdoor plant that will keep on living might be more appropriate than cut flowers that will quickly fade.
9. Write down how you feel. Using a package of inexpensive Valentines from the drug store or grocery store — or, for that matter, any kind of paper — you could write out dozens of reasons why you love your mate. Leave the messages all over the house, in both noticeable and hidden-away places. This is a gift that could keep on giving for weeks or months to come.
10. Plan ahead for next year. If Valentine’s Day is a holiday that matters to you and your significant other, make a mental note of how quickly it can sneak up on you after the big winter holidays in December. Think about realistic ways you can cut back on your spending so you’ll be able to use cash to cover all of the 2008-09 holidays without relying on credit cards and going into debt. Can you cut back on costly coffee drinks, snacks and sodas during your work day? Or maybe put off some discretionary purchases you’ve been thinking about making?

Healthy Fitness Tips to Keep your Body

9 Fitness Tips

One way of attaining a healthy and fit body is to move your body even if you sleeping on your pillow.

Move it

Make it a daily habit to find ways to move your body. You can climb stairs, chase your kids or play around with them, toss balls with friends, walk around at the mall and do a window shopping, walk your dog at the park, do household chores or do your own laundry. Just do anything that moves your limbs, because it not only a good fitness routine but also it takes away stress.

Think "move" in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45 minute aerobic dance class or tai chi, kickboxing, belly dancing, jogging around the city, doing sports, swimming in your pool back and forth, and lifting heavy bars. But that's great when you're up to it.

Cut back on fat

Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats like pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage. Dairy products such as chesse, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low-fat versions.

Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lo-fate versions suchs substitutre butter, fat-free cheeses and mayonnaise

Low fat diet

Throw out the cigarrette

The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking "is harmful to your health," Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill.

stress

Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts.

Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like walk on the beach, at the mall or in the park, read a good book, visit a friend and talk some joke stories, watch a funny movie, get a massage, have a facial or a haircut or go fishing with your kids or friends. Take time to smell the fragrance of beuatiful roses. Avoid conversing to people who have negative attitudes. If you'll be doing all the time you will definitely ease your mind and reduce your stress level.

Wear your seat belt

There are countless of car accidents happened and many have died because of not wearing their seat belts. We also know that the sole purpose of having seat belts in our car is to protect us from serious injuries or death. It is wise to wear your seat belts all the time even if you're a good driver or driving slowly. It would matter how fast or slow because you're never know when accidents happen.

Why I included this? because if we live long without injuires then I could say that we are fit.

Protect yourself from pollution

If you're living in the city, it would be very hard to keep away from it but if you do live in the province like in the mountains then you will be breathing fresh air. It also be nice to live along side of the beach to have that great feeling in the morning.

If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smokefilled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercisng near busy thoroughfares.

It would be a good idea to plant lots of shrubbery in your yard like roses that you can smell, and green ornamentals even if you just use large pots and plastic containers. Also add in your yard some herbal plants such as Aloe Vera, Kammunngay, and Taheebo.

Avoid excessive drinking

Most of us know that too much of anything is not good especially when in comes to drinking. Recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver, and kidney disease and cancer.

Floss your teeth

Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Is it perhaps because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than poeple who don't? Just do it.

Keep a positive outlook

There's a difinitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. It's a fitness exercise that you can begin today. Decide to have a brighter outlook. Take that joyful walk every day.

10 simple ways to get your car ready for winter

1. Get the right kind of oil change. Are you approaching the time for a 30,000-mile full service for your vehicle? If so, don’t procrastinate! Among other things, the service should include an oil change, and the oil used should have the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures.

2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades? They usually work effectively for about one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due. Here’s
another important step to take before you find yourself struggling to see in a blinding storm: Fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. (Plain water won’t do the trick at this time of year because it freezes.) Also check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clear.

3. Give your battery a little TLC. This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, have a certified repair shop test its ability to hold a charge. Granted, you might be able to find a Good Samaritan to help you jump-start your vehicle in the middle of a blizzard — but wouldn’t you rather avoid such a scenario altogether?

4. Examine your belts and hoses. When you have that full service done on your vehicle, make sure the belts and hoses get checked for wear and tear — even if you’re driving a modern car. Cold weather can do a number on belts and hoses, so they deserve attention.

5. Check your tire pressure. Your tires must be properly inflated to ensure you’ll have the best possible traction as you drive along — and traction is often severely jeopardized in wet, snowy or icy conditions. The air pressure in your tires has likely dropped as the weather has gotten colder, so it’s important to see where things stand now. (You can generally expect that you’ll lose 1 pound per square inch whenever the temperature drops by 10 degrees Fahrenheit.) Again, your trusty owner’s manual will tell you what your target tire pressure should be.

6. Think about switching to snow tires. Do you live in a hilly place that gets its fair share of snow? Then you might want to improve traction even more by investing in winter tires and using them over the next few months instead of your usual all-season tires. When shopping around for snow tires, ask about all the fees that might come into play, such as fees for mounting and balancing. You can accomplish this easily and make accurate cost comparisons by asking each store for the “out the door charge.”

7. Do you have four-wheel drive? If so, it’s important to check the status of your four-wheel-drive system and be sure it’s working correctly — especially because most drivers don’t use their 4WD systems in the pleasant summer months. Be sure that the system engages and disengages easily, and that all drivers in your household know how and when to activate the system.

8. Get the antifreeze mixture just right. Aim for having a 50-50 mix of antifreeze (coolant) and water inside your radiator. This will prevent the mixture from freezing even at ridiculously cold temperatures. It’s easy to check the status of the mixture with an inexpensive antifreeze tester, which you can pick up at any auto parts store. If the mixture is off, your cooling system should be drained and refilled or flushed. Be sure you’re equipped to dispose of your old antifreeze properly if you do this job yourself. It can’t just be poured down the drain.

9. Prepare an emergency kit. Store this stuff in your trunk during the winter months, especially if a road trip is in your future:

  • a blanket
  • extra boots and gloves
  • an extra set of warm clothes
  • extra water and food, including hard candies
  • an ice scraper
  • a small shovel
  • a flashlight
  • windshield washer fluid
  • windshield wipers
  • flares
  • jumper cables
  • a tool kit
  • tire chains
  • a tire gauge
  • a spare tire with air in it
  • tire-changing equipment
  • a first-aid kit
  • paper towels
  • a bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter, which can provide additional traction if a tire gets stuck in snow.
  • Also, keep the gas tank as full as you can to prevent the gas lines from freezing.

10. Know what to do if you get stranded. Don’t wander away from your car unless you’re completely sure about where you are and how far away help is. Light two flares and situate them at each end of your vehicle to call attention to your plight. Put on the extra clothes and use the blanket to stay warm. If you have enough gas in the tank, run the engine and heater for about 10 minutes for each hour you’re waiting for help. Leave at least one window open a little bit so that snow and ice don’t seal the car shut. Suck on a hard candy to prevent your mouth from getting too dry.

Protect Your Dog - Fleas & Ticks

How To Protect Your Pets From Fleas And Ticks?
A flea infestation in their pet is every dog owner's nightmare. Fleas are notoriously hard to get rid of, although they can easily find a home in your dog's thick fur. They also breed easily, and a female can lay eggs just 48 hours after her first blood meal. That's not all. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day! By the time you notice a flea, there could be a full blown infestation on your hands.

Getting rid of fleas isn't the equivalent of delousing for humans. Fleas have no wings, but have incredibly powerful legs that allow them to jump as far as 16 inches at a time!

If you find your dog furiously scratching himself, and fidgety, or has trouble sleeping, you might want to check him for fleas. If you notice sores or bare patches of skin on him, you can be sure it's a flea infestation. Fleas don't adapt well to light, so you might find it hard to look for them in your dog's thick fur. Check his belly and inner thighs - you'll have a better chance of catching them in these areas. Also, check for flea dirt. Basically, these are flea droppings, and resemble crushed pepper. If you see a blackish powdery substance on his skin, pick it and crush it between your fingers. Fleas drink blood and your flea dirt should stain your fingers red.

Once you have confirmed your dog's flea attack, consult your vet about a topical application for his flea infestation. Also, consult him about the use of a flea collar. Flea collars make for an inhospitable environment for fleas, and can be quite effective for the prevention of fleas in the future. These are meant to be used judiciously because they contain toxic chemicals. Flea shampoos are also beneficial in eliminating fleas. A flea comb will allow you to comb through and look for fleas manually, but these aren't that effective. Plus, you risk cross contaminating other areas in the house or yard because fleas tend to jump such long distances and are hard to pin down.

Ticks
Ticks belong to the arachnid family, and are blood sucking mites that leech themselves to your dog's skin, and gorge on his blood. In doing so, they can grow in size, a whopping hundred times. Unlike fleas, ticks are much harder to catch especially if your dog has a thick coat of fur. The only way to look for a tick infestation is to comb through with a comb, and look for black mites. The head, ears, feet and neck are the most popular haunts of the tick. Ticks can carry Lymes disease, and can cause severe anemia in a dog, if the infestation continues over a period of time. Tick paralysis can also result from the mite feasting on your dog's blood over a long period of time.

Ticks are fond of dampness, grassy areas and wet areas. If your dog has been out playing in the grass or woods, give him a tick check when he returns. Use tweezers to catch hold of a tick, and drop it in rubbing alcohol to kill it. Don't flush it down the toilet or throw it out - ticks are survivors!

Tick control products come in both herbal and chemical varieties. Consult your vet about the right kind of tick product to use on your dog.

Stop Your Barking Dog

Barking dogs are often a nuisance but it helps to understand why your dog is barking. Remember, there are many different reasons why dogs bark excessively. Oftentimes some people use a dog barking collar to control the barking, but this is not necessary.

A dog will often bark to attract attention when they are lonely or bored, or sometimes they are simply overly sensitive to every movement or sound. It is possible that your dog has learned to bark as a means to get your attention. If he or she has been barking and you’re yelling “Stop Barking!”, he learns it’s an easy way to garner attention.

It is necessary to keep three objectives in mind when attempting to correct inappropriate or excessive barking. First, avoid the situations that tend to provoke the barking; secondly, reduce the number of barks when they do begin barking; and finally, increase the duration of the quiet times between barking sessions. It is usually very difficult to eliminate barking altogether. Remember, it is okay for a dog to briefly bark a happy greeting when you return home or “sound the alarm” when he sees something out of the usual.

There are also some basic training techniques that can be done to reduce excessive barking. First of all, do yourself and your dog a favor by learning some basic dog training. You will be able to establish yourself as the leader, so that when you give the command "No Bark!" he will instantly obey. And please, do not physically punish your dog for barking. It is very hard for dogs to understand, after the fact, what they being rebuked for.

It is also a good idea to praise your dog when he is not barking. This might seem silly, but it usually works. As your dog is lying around quietly, say, "Good Dog!" After the third or fourth alarm bark, say, "NO BARK!" When he stops his barking, ask him to "Sit," followed with praise and a "Good Dog!" You have then given a verbal reprimand for excessive barking and followed it up with a command and praise which indicates what you would like him to do after he barks an alarm. Try to use a quiet, soft voice which will force him to listen to you.

If your dog barks immediately after you leave your home, you might want to change the way you leave. Try to act unemotional, simply saying “Bye-bye, Rover” and then walking out. Practice this when you are not really leaving your house for good. Do so by leaving your house for a short while and then quietly returning. If he is not barking, go into the house and give him lots of praise. If he is barking, verbally reprimand him and leave again. Be consistent and persistent with your training and your dog will stop barking in no time.

choice car audio

This car audio review covers the key factors to consider in selecting the car stereo system that will meet your needs. So you got tired of the OEM car sound system did you ? This car audio review will go over the key factors to consider in selecting the car stereo system that will meet your needs. Before discussing the individual components of a car stereo system here is a word of advice ... broughtto you by the CarAccessoriesMagazine !! Don't jump on next week's sale, don't rush your car audio review process, take your time, talk to friends, sales people, installers and get a goodfeel for what you really want. This car audio review will hopefully give you a head start.

IN DASH RECEIVER

In any car audio review, the most common question that people considering a change of car stereo system ask : will anaftermarket radio fit into my vehicle ? And the answer is ... (roll the drums) ... YES, becausethere are a variety of aftermarket kits available to adapt just about any aftermarket radio toyour vehicle.

AMPLIFIERS

The next item covered in this car audio review is the amplifiers . They are the backbone ofyour car stereo system. Weak amplifiers damage good speakers, not the other way around.Amplifiers are providing the musical power and do a great job of eliminating distortion and of upgrading the sound clarity. The size of the amplifiers will be proportionate to the level ofpower you want. You can tell a good power amp by turning the system above half volume and stillhearing clear amplification. Bear in mind that the more power you have the better control youhave over your system.

The location of the amplifiers in the vehicle is not critical, as long as they have enoughair flow and are mounted on a dry surface. If you install the amps yourself you will needa kit consisting of power wire, ground wire, RCA, remote turn on lead and a fuse. Crimpersand a drill are all the tools required.

Important features of a good car amplifier

CAR SPEAKERS

Next in our car audio review let's look at the benefits of aftermarket speakers. They have a larger frequency response (more music coming through the speakers), more power handling capabilities, they will brighten your highs and increase your bass.

There are two types of CAR speakers available : the dual cone and the two way. A dual cone has a small paper cone built into a larger paper cone. A two way actually mounts a separate tweeter on the larger paper cone. This allows for more frequency response and better sound quality. You will need to check the fit of your new speakers with your vehicle. You can take off your speaker cover and measure it. Make sure you get the depth if you can. Not all cars can accommodate speakers with a larger magnet.

More information on car speakers

HEAD UNIT

The next obvious question in this car audio review is : will it be CD or cassette ? The answer really depends on your listening habits and on your budget. Several head units now have both while still fitting into your dash.

You should also consider other important but often overlooked features in going through your car audio review. Many models offer detachable faceplates. This security feature will only work if you actually remove the faceplate. Some models have a plate that rotates when you turn off the vehicle, which makes it look like it’s been removed.

Another feature is an automatic volume control : the system automatically adjusts the radio volume up or down, depending on the vehicle's speed and the varying amount of road and wind noise in the vehicle.

Look for a unit that has large buttons versus small. Large buttons are easier to find and use. The radio should cause a minimum amount of distraction so the driver can keep his eyes and attention on the road. If you want to push this idea to the limit try to find a radio with greater spacing between the buttons. This makes the radio easier and safer to use as well.

The last head unit feature to discuss in our car audio review is the radio display. Large numbers and a clear readout is another reason for an enjoyable listening experience. Also, look for a radio that shows not only the radio station call number but also the time and preset number.

OTHER ACCESSORIES

This car audio review would not be complete without covering a few more items. First let's talk about tweeters. Although not a guarantee of quality sound, the use of separate tweeters will generally enhance the sound quality. Then we have separate subwoofers which are usually a good value for the cost because they will enhance the lower end sound on classical styles of music.

Our car audio review should ALSO cover the subject of CD changers. The "remote" changer type can be mounted under some seats, but traditionally they fit the best in the trunk area or rear hatch area. There is also the option of custom mounting the changer in the glove box or a side panel. It can be added to any system through a RF controller unit which interfaces through the existing AM/FM antenna lead. The frequency response thru the RF modulator is as good as with an in-dash CD but it still sounds better than a cassette. The "remote" changer can include up to 12 CDs. The in-dash CD is a cool feature that has begun to appear on more and more vehicles recently. Instead of a single-play CD changer in-dash, many systems now offer a six-disc unit. Bear in mind that the head unit and CD changer must be the same manufacturer and more importandly the same operating system. Some older models will not work with your newer models despite the fact they are the same manufacturer.
